About DSL
DSL is an acronym for Digital Subscriber Line. DSL technology allows for high-speed
data transmission over ordinary copper phone lines that the telephone
companies have connected to homes and businesses. DSL achieves higher
speeds by expanding the usable bandwidth of copper phone lines.
Why do I want DSL?
- DSL is Always On, 24 hours a day
- No Dial-Up Required
- No Dropped Connections
- Super Fast Speeds
- Flat Rate Billing
- Upgrade Your Speed As Your Needs Change
- Cost Effective
- The Bandwidth You Need To Truly Experience the Internet
What types of DSL does SelectNet provide?
Since the speed of DSL service is generally distance dependent, the type of DSL service SelectNet provides depends on the distance from your location to the telephone company’s central office in your area and certain technological limitations.
Why is DSL better than cable Internet service?
Cable Internet systems operate in a shared network environment, similar to a corporate Local Area Network (LAN), where all of the users in a particular
cable 'node' share the same connection to the network. This poses 2 distinct problems:
- First, since the connections are shared, the total bandwidth available within that
node is shared between all of the users. When multiple people connect to the Internet through
a cable ‘node’, there is less bandwidth available to each user. DSL offers you a dedicated connection,
and therefore dedicated bandwidth.
- Cable modem networks also operate in a proprietary network that prevents you from
choosing an ISP to partner with, your only option is to receive service from whomever
your cable company chooses.
