What is an IP address?
An IP address (or Internet Protocol address) is a 32-bit numeric address that includes a
network address identifier and a host or end station identifier. Every computer on the
network has a unique IP address that allows for data, email, or other files to be correctly
delivered to that computer.
When are the IP addresses assigned?
Once SelectNet receives your order and begins the provisioning process, the IP addresses
are assigned based on the solution you have ordered.
What is DNS?
DNS stands for Domain Name (or Naming) System. The DNS is a shared database that
translates a domain name into an IP address. The DNS allows you to enter a domain
name such as select.net into your browser instead of having to remember a string of
numbers that constitute the corresponding IP address for select.net.
What is SMTP? POP?
SMTP and POP stand for Simple Mail Transfer Protocol and Post Office Protocol,
respectively. SMTP and POP refer to the servers on the network that allow you to send
and receive email.
